Project Summary EN
13 • Stimulate reflection amongst participants on the issues associated with integration and difficulties currently being experienced by migrants; • Identify the core skills necessary to deliver the complete MIE programme; • Review techniques used in the MIE curriculum to test their effectiveness; • Explore models of participation in order to identify the most useful and effective approaches. The course was delivered in a blended learning format over two days of face- to-face classroom instruction, with participants undertaking up to 18 hours of self-directed learning following this, accessed through the Project e-Learning Platform. The training delivery utilised the Facilitator Handbook as a guide during delivery. This included the use of lesson plans for each day of the workshop as well as supporting worksheets, handouts and PowerPoint slides. The emphasis was on ‘learning by doing’, to familiarise themselves with the materials and resources available and with an opportunity to try these out. Adopting this approach ensured that by experiencing the activities as a participant first, the adult educators would be better placed to understand the training from the perspective of a migrant woman, and could therefore tailor the training style adopted accordingly. Feedback from the training was very positive, with many of the participants indicating that they intended to adopt or apply much of what they had learned in their future engagement with migrant women. Key learning included: • Skills Development – participants indicated that they had developed their skills as a result of the training, including communication and facilitation skills; • Increased Cultural Understanding – participants had developed a better understanding of migrant communities, including the culture of the host country; • Women as migrant integration experts – there was an acceptance that migrant women, if properly trained and supported, are well placed to perform this role; and • Length of Training – participants did indicate that they would have benefited from more than two days of face-to-face learning, with the workshops perhaps delivered over three days instead in future. One participant stated, ‘It gave me a very clear idea about how to train women from other cultures to integrate into society and to seek any help they need’.
